Nukoduke! Review

Nukoduke! is a manga by Yugi Iro released in year 2000. The genre is labelled Comedy, Shoujo & Slice of Life but there is more than that.

Summary on Mangago.me:

"A heartwarming story about the daily lives of a freeter named Yuuya and his two part cat, part human pets."

The short comic introduces the main character Yuuya who is a very relaxed part timer. He adopted two nuko (cat hybrid) who were abandoned. This story revolves around Yuuya's life with the introduction of his new pets.

Starting off as light hearted and adorable, we get to see more of the Nukos' adorable sides. Sasame the girl who has a very gentlemanly aura and a regular heartthrob is a black haired nuko. The other nuko is Kei who is a very pretty male nuko.

As the story develops we come to discover Yuuya's friends and family. His little brother is a famous model and his neighbour is a walking disaster zone. Inori is a ghost who the nukos discovered in Yuuya's house and she has more than just a side story.

In the recent chapter 91 to 94 (Love Story), it is revealed how Yuuya though seemingly easy going, has a deep sense of responsibility. His love for Inori who had passed away is shown by his dedication and his love for his younger brother was revealed despite his lack of interest most of the time.

A Christmas update that made us all tear was when Yuuya was shown crying over Inori's death and Inori begging his back then high school friend turned neighbour to not call Yuuya during her final moments. Full of guilt and self hatred at falling sick and causing Yuuya to miss Inori's final moments, Yuuya's brother hallucinates with his high fever. Sasame displays her maturity and comforts the man while Kei and Yuuya goes shopping to restock their depleted fridge supplies.

My thoughts:

I have been following this manga for a while and I really love how it is always short and simple. Yet it can relate to many of the things in life that I face. Short and cheerful or realistically painful, this manga has it all. A slice of life is an understatement. This is a manga projecting the many slices of life. With every chapter we can't help but fall in love with the adorable nukos and Yuuya.

When life gives you lemons, have a nuko. They will never fail to cheer you up! Thank you Yugi Iro sensei for this wonderful work. I'll always look forward to your next work!
